The House Education Committee has approved House Joint Resolution 103 – Election of West Virginia Board of Education members amendment – to amend the Constitution. H. J. R. 103 was approved 13-8.
Delegate Michael Folk (R – Berkeley) spoke in favor of the resolution and said the election would allow the people to elect educators to the board and have board members from various regions of the state.
Delegate Rick Moye (D – Raleigh) said he was concerned about the costs an election would bring and that the election would lead to political influence in the education system.
The resolution will now move to the Judiciary Committee for consideration.
The House approved H.B. 2799 – prohibiting the superintendent of schools from requiring a physical examination to be included to the application for a minor’s work permit – and referred to the Judiciary Committee.
