Senate Passes Bill to Fill 2016 Budget, Advances Tobacco Tax Increase.

The Senate passed Senate Bill 1002  this afternoon, a measure that would fill the revenue hole in the current 2016 state budget that ends June 30. The funding bill includes the sweeping of various state accounts, $12 million from the Legislature’s traffic account and $29 million from the Rainy Day Fund. The bill moves on to the House of Delegates for consideration.

The Senate also advanced Senate Bill 1005 , a measure to increase the tobacco tax by 45 cents, to third reading. The legislation is scheduled for a vote in the Senate tomorrow.

Senate Bill 1006, which would authorize the Governor to furlough state employees and pay certain obligations in event of fiscal emergency, was introduced and referred to the Judiciary committee on Wednesday.

The Senate is adjourned until tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.

Senate Finance will meet tomorrow at 10 a.m. in 451M.
