The House convened at 11 a.m. today during the thirty-fifth day of session.
S. B. 62 – adjusting requirements for hiring school attendance directors – passed 86-14 in the House. The bill will be communicated to the Senate.
S. B. 267 – increasing salaries of certain state employees – passed 98-1 in the House. The House approved the bill to become effective July 1, 2018.
After rejection of proposed ammendments in yesterday’s session to S.B. 267 that would have raised the salary increase of certain state employees more, many delegates said they were disapointed while voting for this bill. Other delegates said the increase they have come up with is the best that West Virginia can do for now, but hope to increase it in later years.
H. B. 4009 – State Settlement and Recovered Funds Accountability Act – passed 90-7 in the House and was approved to become effective July 1, 2018.
H. B. 4407 – relating to eligibility for alternative program teacher certificate – passed the House 48-50.
Some delegates said they were concerned that passage of this H.B. 4407 would devalue teachers. The bill would remove the requirment that the person have an academic major or occupational area the same as or similar to subject matter he or she is being hired to teach.
Seven bills were read a second time and 12 others advanced to second reading.
